November 4 – Liberation Day commemorations bring Kiwis and Quercitains together

The 4th of November marks 106 years since soldiers of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade scaled the walls of Le Quesnoy to liberate its people after more than four years of German occupation.

Te Arawhata is coming together with the New Zealand Community in France to commemorate this special occasion in Le Quesnoy.

Te Arawhata is hosting a three-day event from November 2 – 4, including a special dinner in Valenciennes on November 2, a visit to Arras on November 3, and commemorations at Te Arawhata in Le Quesnoy on November 4.

The Sunday day trip to Arras visits the incredible Wellington Tunnels, an 18-kilometre-long tunnel system dug by the New Zealand Tunnelling Company in 1917 which enabled the biggest surprise attack of the First World War.

Monday in Le Quesnoy includes a commemoration service, lunch and dinner events, and guided visits of the New Zealand Liberation Museum – Te Arawhata, Le Quesnoy’s imposing, centuries-old ramparts, and the military cemetery.

As was the case back in 1918, New Zealanders and Quercitains will meet to further strengthen the connection between our two countries.
