Anzac Biscuits

Some recipes are more than just recipes. The Anzac biscuit is one of them.

On 16 April, Te Arawhata Learning and Engagement Officier Lindsay welcomed apprentice bakers for a truly special workshop, a moment of sharing built around a recipe that has travelled the world for over 100 years. The Museum filled with the scent of sweet coconut and oat biscuits fresh from the oven, and something very simple and very beautiful took place: people aged 14, 19 and in their sixties, gathered around the same bowl, recreating that familiar kitchen atmosphere where a recipe is passed from hand to hand, from one generation to the next.

Claire, one of our apprentice bakers, shared her thoughts:

“I really loved doing this workshop with Lindsay’s explanation of why ANZAC biscuits are made in the first place. The context of these biscuits during the war was so vivid and meaningful. I absolutely loved it and I’m already planning to come back for more!”

That is Te Arawhata at its heart. History, transmission, connection. He tangata, he tangata, he tangata – it is the people that matter here.
